- Curator's comments
- This was first attributed to Hans von Aachen by Gerszi, who reproduced the associated engraving by Egidius Sadeler (Hollstein Dutch xxi-xxii, no.35) for which it is a direct study. Sadeler's print has a wide ornamental border designed by Joris Hoefnagel; the companion print by Sadeler is a 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt' after Spranger (Hollstein 36). Prior to this, the drawing was placed with the anonymous sixteenth-century Dutch and Flemish drawings. Jacoby dates the drawing to about 1590.
