- Summary of J.Rowlands, 'Drawings by German Artists and Artists from German-speaking regions of Europe in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum: the Fifteenth Century, and the Sixteenth Century by Artists born before 1530', London, BM Press, 1993, no. 119:
'The drawings on either side of this sheet should be considered together, as the horseman on the recto is a worked-up detail of the one in the central foreground of the sketch on the verso. The rider on the recto is shown rising in his saddle with his horse's forelock and tail decorated with sprigs of oak signifying a successful hunt, and the group of riders in the foreground of the verso may therefore be returning from a hunt. Such a decoration appears again on another drawing, also from the early years of Dürer's career, the ‘Couple on horseback’ in Berlin (Kupferstichkabinett, KdZ.3; Winkler, 'Dürer', i, p. 40, pl. 54), and several other drawings of subjects with horses were made at this stage of Dürer's career. The rider on the recto also recalls figures drawn by Dürer in Basel for woodcut illustrations to a planned edition of the Comedies of Terence. Most of the blocks for this remain uncut with the designs drawn on their surface. They are preserved in the Kunstmuseum, Basel (inv. nos. z. 425-556).'
