Curator's comments
The key to discovering the origin of this design, which is dominated by the stones, is to be found in the character of the setting. The curling, intertwining framework with the absence of strapwork indicates a date in the second quarter of the sixteenth century. The drawing most probably represents a jewel produced in south Germany, conceivably in Nuremberg.
