- Curator's comments
- This drawing has always been listed as a work by Pordenone but it was not published as such until 1977. It is a study for the south-east section of the dome with the central figure of Habbakuk in the Basilica of S. Maria di Campagna, Piacenza, painted in 1530-2 (Furlan no. 72, the relevant section illustrated p. 190; Cohen 1996, II, fig. 417). The drawing is a careful study of the lighting of the figures. Technical examination during a recent cleaning of the dome has shown that Pordenone did not use cartoons for the figures in the dome except for God the Father in the oculus (the finished fresco is more or less identical to the drawing, save for changes to the foot of the rightmost sibyl and the addition of an angel to the background). Traces of squaring on the surface indicate that Pordenone copied his designs directly from squared drawings such as this one.
Three drawings of comparable finish and technique for other sections of the dome survive in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle; and at the Kunsthalle, Bremen (Furlan 1988, nos. D32-4). According to Cohen, the Bremen and Oxford drawings are less well drawn than those in the BM and at Windsor, and might be collaborative works between Pordenone and a workshop assistant (see Cohen 1980, pp. 62-3 and 107). Cohen published five chiaroscuro type copies in a private collection in Munich, one of which is a copy of the present drawing (the latter illustrated Cohen 1996, II, fig. 450).
