- Curator's comments
- Giovanni Agosti noted that this is a study for one of the side walls in chapel XI dedicated to the Massacre of the Innocents commissioned from Giovanni Battitsta and his brother Mauro in 1590 as part of the Sacro Monte at Varallo devotional complex. The painted terracotta sculptures that fill the centre of the chapel by Giacomo Paracca Bargnola da Valsoda were completed by the following year.
