Curator's comments
'Skipper' was the cant nickname for a person of strong Hanoverian partisanship. The traditional identification of the sitter with the 6th Earl of Haddington is confirmed by the appearance in the sale of the contents of Tyninghame in East Lothian (the estate of the Earls of Haddington) in 1987 (Sotheby house sale, 28-9 September 1987, lot 582) of 59 impressions of this mezzotint.
