- Curator's comments
- In Payne Knight's collection this was attributed to Andrea del Sarto.
As Roger Rearick first observed, this is a preliminary study for an altarpiece of 1531 in the church of San Salvatore, Venice. The painting was damaged by fire in the 18th century and was long believed to have been lost, but it survives in a very damaged state behind the main altar in the church. The painting's composition is fairly close to that studied here except the number and disposition of the saints differ (see illustration in Pordenone cat. p. 142). The verso of the drawing contains a number of ideas for a altarpiece inspired by Raphael's 'Madonna di Foligno'.
