- Curator's comments
Perhaps the same head as that studied full face in Pp,1.35 (Popham and Pouncey 125). An inferior version of the present drawing is in the Ambrosiana, Milan (F 263 inf. 85: see exhib. cat., Milan, 1987, no. 16, p. 68). In the Milan drawing the figure is shown bust-length, perhaps indicating that the BM drawing has been cut, and with a chaperon covering his head. Pietro Marani's attribution of the present work to the anonymous Milanese follower of Leonardo, the Master of the Pala Sforzesca, is tentatively accepted here as the hard outlines and smooth, even shading are found in other works assigned to him such as the 'Head of a Man' in the Ambrosiana (F 263 inf. 79; exhib. cat., Milan, 1987, no. 11, p. 62).

Popham & Pouncey 1950
Apparently the same head as Pp,1.35, in profile. Another version, seemingly inferior in quality, is in the Ambrosiana (photo. Braun 75037). In it more of the head and body appears and the head-dress seems to be some sort of chaperon.
