The old attribution following Padre Resta's inscription in the lower right was to Filippino Lippi. It was given to Spagna by Fischel, an attribution never subsequently questioned. Popham and Pouncey compare the figure with the angels in the apse of the church of S. Martino, Trevi of 1512 (F. Todini, 'La Pittura Umbra dal Duecento al primo Cinquecento', Milan, 1989, II, fig. 1398) and those in his altarpiece dated 1511 of the 'Coronation of the Virgin' in the Pinacoteca at Todi (Todini, I, pl. XLVII opposite p. 321).

Resta's attribution to Filippino Lippi is recorded also in Lansdowne MS. 802, Liber F, no. 12, where there is a reference to the artist's activity in the church of S. Maria sopra Minerva, in Rome. The attribution to Lo Spagna is due to Fischel. The figure may be compared with the angels in the apse of the church of S. Martino at Trevi of 1512 (photo. Alinari, 5764) or those in the 'Coronation of the Virgin' at Todi of 1511 (Van Marle, xiv, fig. 295), where the facial types and the drapery are very similar.
