- This drawing is among a number of preparatory studies for the painting of Jacob with the Angel that Claude produced in 1672 for van Halmale and which is recorded as No. 181 in the Liber Veritatis (for which see BM inv. no. 1957,1214.187). These include figures studies and compositional studies, of which the present drawing is believed to tbe the first (for all see Roethlisberger 1968, nos. 1046–1056). This drawing is also double-sided with recto and verso showing Claude trailling out the composition n a manner that was facilaited by tracing half of the design through from one side of the sheet to the other. Differetces in the hanlding of recto and verso – the latter being more precisely drawn, and the verso more worked out – makes it difficult to establish which composition was drawn first.
