- Curator's comments
- Claude here used exclusively pen to construct a strong composition. There are various pentimenti in the foreground in the area of the water in the centre, but otherwise the compositon is strongly and competently modelled. For these reasons, Roethlisberger placed it among six such landscape drawings, all of which were executed in the mid 1650s (for the others see Roethlisberger 1968, nos. 782–787, another in the BM being Oo,6.130). Conversely, Klemm proposed that the drawing was made in the 1630s or 1640s, noting that his pen and ink drawings can be generally hard to date.
