- This is a rapidly conceived compsotional study. It does not correspond to a completed painting which is unsurprising given that the setting more enclosed than any of the paintings that Claude produced in his late career. Roethlisberger suggests that it may have been made in connection with the ‘Landscape with Erminia and the Shepherd’ that Claude produced in 1666 (for which see LV 166, BM inv. no. 1957,1214.172).
