- Curator's comments
- Claude’s confident rendering of this landscape scene almost exclusively in wash places it among several drawings dateable to mid-1630s. The circular framing device effected in the foreground is also characteristic of Claude during this period (see for instance, Oo,6.119). The pen lines with which the composition was established are scrawling and expressive, but at the same time the composition is devoid of any context and is almost abstract.
