The identification of the subject is not conclusive. The drawing was acquired by the Department as 'Herod receiving the head of St. John', and catalogued by Binyon (Vol III p 116) as 'Orodes receiving the head of Crassus'. Mortimer also exhibited 'Tydeus receiving the head of Menelippus' at the Society of Artists in 1776 But the 'Marius receiving the head of Antonius' shown there in 1775 is closer in date.
