- This portrait can be dated between 1599 when Essex went to Ireland, and his fall in 1600.
This print was issued as a black and white facsimile by the British Museum in 'Reproductions of Prints in the British Museum', New Series Part IX (Specimens of Line-engraving by the Earliest Masters Working in England (About 1545-1695)), Published by the Trustees in 1900, where it was number III and described there as 'Thomas Cockson. Portrait of Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex.'; see 1900,10.31.6.3 (Shelfmark 245*.b.23).
