This is a copy in reverse after the painting by Titian, commissioned in 1619 by bishop Jacopo Pesaro for the family chapel in the Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. The painting was inaugurated in 1624 and celebrates victory in a naval expedition against the Turks led by the bellicose cleric in 1502 (a Turk is seen behind the knight). See Wethey, 1969, cat No.55.
