The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This was a famous viewpoint from which to depict the falls and temples of Tivoli. Towne would have been aware of the views that Richard Wilson and Gaspar Dughet had made near the same spot. Towne has punctuated his horizon line with a miniature view of St Peter's, drawing the eye into the scene, so that the view of Tivoli itself serves partly to frame the more distant view of Rome. Among a group of Tivoli views that were worked on heavily many years after visiting Italy, the sky, Tivoli townscape and mid- and background of this watercolour seem largely to remain the work of 1781.
