The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This shows the ruins of the unfinished Palazzo Donn'Anna on the coast at Posillipo. It may have been conceived originally as part of a broader panoramic view. Immediately to the right of this view stood Sir William Hamilton's small casino that was shortly to become known as Villa Emma. It was one of the favourite residences of Hamilton who was the British representative to the Neapolitan court. Towne and Jones called on him during the month Towne spent in Naples.
