The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This is a view of the bridge across the Fossa della Ceccina in the countryside north of Rome. The composition closely follows a drawing made in the 1750s by Richard Wilson, the landscape painter whose interpretations of Italian scenery were an enormous influence on artists of Towne's generation.
Like the previous watercolour, Towne's sketch covers one and a half sheets, each of which has been treated differently. Here, Towne has worked mainly on the right-hand sheet and was content to leave the left sheet with only rather loose watercolour washes. The watercolours in Towne's bequest reached the Museum in various states of completion and development, which reflect Towne's interests and priorities at different points in his life.
Towne usually began his sketch with a pencil outline. Using a brush, he then applied watercolour washes, and went over the pencil with pen and ink. The method varied, however. Sometimes Towne added a pen line before the washes, and sometimes the pen was omitted altogether.
