The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
In the later 1780s and 1790s, in order to keep pace with changing fashions in watercolour Towne experimented with a new style and often drew watercolours without a pen outline. In this watercolour, Towne perhaps added the tree at the centre of this view during those later years. The sense of technical vacillation evident in the image itself is matched by the inscription on the back of the mount, where Towne scratched out the date of 'Febry 5 1781' only to add it back in again.
