This view of an unidentified garden in the Arco Oscuro area near the Villa Giulia gives Towne ample opportunity to show his ability to create decorative patterns through his penwork. A bold approach to shape and composition is also evident, with the tall dark pine tree at the centre of the sheet providing a startlingly dominant counterpoint to the small human figure walking down the path below. These are characteristics that appealed to early 20th century viewers of Towne's work.
