The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
Given the prominence of the Colosseum among Rome's ancient ruins, it is no surprise that Towne devoted eight views to it among his series of Roman watercolours. The lack of sky and the interior character of the space made it an uncharacteristic subject for Towne, but with their crumbling masonry, mud-strewn floors and encroaching plant life, the interior Colosseum watercolours are among Towne's most effective portrayals of Rome's imperial might brought low by the ravages of time.
