The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This and the following watercolour (Nn,2.16) all appear to have been coloured substantially in the 1790s or early 1800s, a period when Towne began to systematically review his Italian watercolours and place them onto stiff mounts. The later colouring of these works - evident, for example in the darker and more atmospheric skies and in the intense greens of the trees - may be contrasted with the cooler and more sedate palette and effects of the Tivoli watercolour to the left.
