The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
This is a view of a famous tomb beside the Ponte Lucano as it crosses the river Aniene just west of Tivoli. The tomb had a circular castellated design similar to the tomb of Cecilia Metella south of Rome. Towne made at least two visits to Tivoli, in April and May 1781. The view depicted in this watercolour was well-known to artists, and Towne has adopted the same viewpoint that was used by Piranesi and others.
