During his first days in Rome, Towne made a group of watercolours of views on the Tiber, of which this is his finest. See Nn,2.3, Nn,2.4, Nn,1.20 and Nn,1.24 for other views of the Tiber.
The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
Towne drew this watercolour on the road near Rome along which travellers passed as they entered the city from the north, crossing over the Ponte Molle. The dome of St Peter's is visible at the far left, the Villa Mellini is a little to its right atop Monte Mario and below it, visible through the riverbank trees, is the Villa Madama.
Rome and its countryside were rich in both classical and artistic associations, having been a focus for landscape painting for at least two centuries. Towne's knowledge about this scenery, and his ideas about how to depict it, were based on the paintings, prints and drawings of earlier artists. A view that the leading British landscape painter Richard Wilson had painted on this spot in 1754, which was bought by John Rolle-Walter (c.1714-1779) of Bicton House, Devon, may have served as Towne's inspiration on this occasion.
