The following label was written by Richard Stephens for the Towne exhibition in 2016:
The Ponte Molle was the famous ancient bridge north of Rome over which travellers approaching from this direction passed on their way into the city. Although the bridge was in the area of Rome where Towne had worked during his initial weeks in the city, evidently he returned there the following summer, as on the mount Towne gave this a date in late June 1781.
