- Curator's comments
- See A. Griffiths (ed.), 'Landmarks in Print Collecting, Connoisseurs and Donors at the British Museum since 1753', BM, 1996, cat. 60. It is based on a painting exhibited at the British Institution in 1819, and now in an Italian private collection.
With no Mesopotamian archaeology or texts to work from, Martin turned to Egyptian and
Indian architecture and to the descriptions of ancient Greek authors for his inspiration, as with the Hanging Gardens shown to the right of the scene.(Babylon Myth & Reality 2008, exhibition at British Museum)
