- Curator's comments
- The titleplate bears the imprint of Lafrery in Rome, and the date 1570. The colophon at the end of the book, however, has the imprint of Pietro Dehuchino in Venice, also with the date 1570. (Another similar copy is in the BL, 551.e.6(3)). It seems probable that Lafrery contracted out the letterpress printing to Dehuchino in Venice, and then had the sheets shipped to Rome where he added the impressions from his copperplates.
For a description of another copy of the book, see Ruth Mortimer, 'Italian XVIc Books ... in the Harvard College Library', Cambridge (Mass) 1974, cat.329.

- Acquisition notes
- MS autograph inscription on endpapers: "M.FOLKES F. R. S. / è Biblioth Woodward" and in a second hand "Bib: Folkes No. 2573" and "Perfect"'. Woodward died in 1728, and Folkes in 1754. On the final flyleaf is the manuscript date "June 15th 1785" in the same second hand, which might be the date of acquisition by the British Museum.
