Illustration to Lowndes' New English Theatre; scene with the actor Robert Bensley playing the title character from James Miller's 'Mahomet'; whole-length, standing directed to right with head almost in profile to right and tilted downwards, looking ahead, an open book in his extended left hand, to which he gestures with the other, left leg forward; wearing eastern costume of pantaloons, ermine-trimmed jacket and short-sleeved cloak, turban with crescent moon and feather, and sword at left hip; standing outdoors, with palm behind and mosque beyond a low wall at left, three turbanned and bearded men standing anxiously behind at right, in front of an arch. 1777

- Bensley first acted the role of Mahomet on 25th November 1765, at Drury Lane Theatre. John Bell also published a plate of him in the role in Bell's British Theatre, 1st December 1776 (K. A. Burnim and P. H. Highfill Jr., 'John Bell, patron of British theatrical portraiture' (Carbondale, Illinois, 1998), cat. 107).
