- Curator's comments
- This plate comes from the series 'A Series of Sixteen Portraits of the most Illustrious Persons who visited London in the month of June, 1814'. For the series and comment on the inventory number, see J,16.1.
If this is Carl Friedrich August (1785-1837), son of Duke Carl Ludwig Friedrich and his second wife Princess Charlotte of Hesse-Darmstadt, he then is not the hereditary prince of the House Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In 1814 the title was held by his half brother Georg Friedrich Carl Joseph (1779-1860) who succeeded their father in 1816.
The likeness of this portrait seems to be closer to Carl than Georg. See also 1982,U.3224 for another portrait and J,10.359 for a visiting card.
