- Catalogue numbers J,10.56 to J,10.400 are visiting cards related to people in Vienna during the Congress of 1814-15, with the exception of the first folder which mainly contains cards collected in London during the Summer of 1814. The visiting cards are still kept in the eleven folders put together by Sarah Sophia Banks. They are sorted as follows:
1 - "Tickets &c. &c. &c. / of Great People who were in / England 1814. / Foreigners" (J,10.56-79)
2 - "Variety. / English" (J,10.80-108)
3 - "Variety" (J,109-144)
4 - "High Rank / etc." (J,10.145-171)
5 - "High Rank / etc." (J,10.172-205)
6 - "Foreigners / High Rank / etc." (J,10.206-241)
7 - "Diplomatique. / Principally of those who had no Business at the Congress." (J,10.242-269)
8 - "Ambassadors etc. / at the / Congress." (J,10.270-309)
9 - "Ambassadors etc. / at the / Congress." (J,10.310-332)
10- "Sovereigns. / etc. etc. etc." (J,10.333-367)
11- "Sovereigns. / etc. etc. etc." (J,10368-400)
The order of the folders as originally intended by Sarah Sophia Banks has been inverted when they were registered for the Museum Collection, so the "Sovereigns" would have come first etc.
An attempt has been made to identify the names on the cards, for which see below and under the "Associated names".
A usueful guide of notable people that were staying in Vienna at the time of the Congress is 'Guide des étrangers à Vienne pendant le congrès : contenant les noms des souverains présents dans cette capitale, ainsi que ceux des ministres et chargés d'affaires des differentes cours auprès de celle de Vienne au mois de Janvier 1815 ; avec l'indication des rues et numero des maisons qu'ils habitent' [Jean Gaggiám], Vienna 1815.
J,10.56 and 58: Probably Ludwig of Bavaria (1786-1868), when Crown Prince. Adolf Michaelis ('Ein Jahrhundert Kunstarchäologischer Entdeckungen', Leipzig 1908, p. 48) claims that when the Crown Prince was in London in 1814 and saw the Parthenon marbles, he was so entranced that he enquired with his banker for the possibility of acquiring them, should the chance arise.
