Curator's comments
The plate was originally printed in Walpole's honour; here it has been re-worked to change its message. See BM Satires for a list of the changes. The letterpress purports to be a letter from Walpole to Caleb d'Anvers, a general pseudonym then in use by contributors to the periodical "The craftsman" (cf BM Satires 1844). For a later version, see BM1868-8-8-3667 (dated 1741).
