- Curator's comments
- Nigel Tattersfield (email June 2021): Mrs Windsor was not a chemist but a condom maker who had previously worked for Mrs Phillips (trade card at Heal 60.8) whose mode of business she closely imitated. Mrs Windsor opened her shop at the sign of the Black Boy, cleverly situated under the piazza in Covent Garden, and directly opposite the ‘New Hummums’, a coffee house and hotel which offered ‘good beds & breakfast with the convenience of hot & cold baths’, but had a chequered history as a brothel in all but name.
