- Curator's comments
- Scholarship is divided concerning the source of this composition. Sune Schéle suggests that the composition is based on a drawing by Marten van Heemskerk, engraved by Cornelis Bos, (followed in the New Hollstein, which describes the present impression as a copy in reverse of Bos' engraving) while Stefania Massari suggests that the composition is originally by Giulio Romano, inspired by a bas-relief in Palazzo del Te. Massari is possibly supported by the addition of Giulio's name to the copies.
The plate shows signs of wear on this impression, which appears to be a later, reworked version of the plate published in 1571 and described in Hollstein 507.a (see Ii,5.19 for first state; the second state is signed 'M. R. incise', so Bertelli might just have been the publisher of this impression, or is quoted here as the engraver who reworked the plate).
For same composition engraved by another artist, see 1861,0518.1312.
