- Curator's comments
- This drawing was listed by Hind as Anonymous, although it had been previously attributed to Meindert Hobbema in the manuscript British Museum inventory of 1837.
The present sheet is in a similar hand as a drawing in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, inv.no.A1544 (formerly attributed to Pieter Molijn and Jan Wynants), both attributed to Jan van der Meer I by Jeroen Giltaij in his 2009 article.
An attribution to Pieter Mulier has previously also been suggested (verbally by An Zwollo, 2003).
Literature: M. Royalton-Kisch, "The Light of Nature: Landscape drawings and watercolours by Van Dyck and his contemporaries", exh.cat. Antwerp and London (British Museum), 1999, cat.no.35 (as Pieter Molijn); J. Giltaij, 'Tekeningen van Jan (I) van der Meer', in Oud Holland 122 (2009), pp.145-154, esp. p.151 and note 19.
