- From Stainton & White 1987:
In 1636 Hollar was commissioned by the Earl of Arundel to join his suite 'en route' for the imperial court in Vienna, and to make a series of views recording the journey up the Rhine and Danube. In May of the same year, Arundel refers to the artist "Wth me who drawes and eches Printes in stronge water quickely, and wth a pretty spirit" (M. Hervey, 'Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel', Cambridge, 1921, p. 366). Hollar produced a large number of views, for the most part in the same medium (see Stainton & White 1987 , cat. no. 67). This one, looking up the River Rhine, shows Arundel's barge, flying the cross of St George, in the centre foreground. He also made an etching of the Rhine near Rheineck, but seen from further downstream (Pennington 743).
(Additional)
This is a worked up version of a sheet now in the Hollar sketchbook at the John Rylands Library (Ms 883, fol. 16v; Volrábová II/12). In this second iteration greater attention is given to the castle, which is enlarged and given more space above, and on Arundel's barge, now placed in the immediate foreground.
