- Curator's comments
- For stylistic reasons this drawing has recently been dated by Alena Volrábová to c. 1635, a suggestion which also places it in a period in which Hollar was actively portraying the Rhineland from his base in Cologne. Compositionally, it should be compared with the approximate engraving (dated 1575) in Braun and Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', II, No 33, although the comparison highlights the unusualness of Hollar's decision to amass all the city's chief landmarks at the extreme left of this scene.
