- Summary of J. Rowlands, Drawings by German Artists and Artists from German- speaking regions of Europe in the Department of Prints and and Drawings at the British Museum: the Fifteenth Century, and the Sixteenth Century by Artists born before 1530, London, BM Press, 1993, no.214:
'This drawing was used by Dürer for the angels holding the crown in his engraving of 1518, ‘The Virgin crowned by two angels’ (Hollstein 38) and perhaps also for the woodcut of the same year, ‘The Virgin crowned by two angels’ (Hollstein 211). The calligraphy, however, indicates an earlier date, c. 1512-14, as Winkler has pointed out. This date is given plausibility by the fact that Dürer produced many drawings connected with the construction of the human head by a method of parallel projection during this period, one of which is on the verso of the present sheet. The most closely related drawings among Dürer's theoretical writings are in the British Library (Department of Manuscripts, Sloane 5231, fols. 145 recto, 146 recto and verso; Rupprich, iii, p.137).'
