Satire on the appointment of the Archbishop of Canterbury in succession to John Potter. Three unsuccessful candidates, Bishops Sherlock, Gibson and Hoadly or Mawson, row up the Thames past Lambeth Palace, and another nearer the far shore rows in the other direction, "Against Tide". On the bank in the foreground, on the left, two gentlemen, apparently politicians, are addressed by three bishops; one of the former says, "Let Honour be ye Reward of Virtue and not Interest" to which one of the bishops replies, "I'll give it up till next" while another holds a paper lettered, "£10000 for it". To the right of centre, the "Two Brothers" (Newcastle and Pelham) tell Bishop Herring that he is the successful candidate; three other bishops stand nearby while to the right, a fourth, his robes tucked up, attacks four watermen, saying "I have beat my way tho' thousands". Further to the right, two other clergymen claim offices in the Church crying "I'll be Dean of ye Arches" and "I Arch Deacon". 1747
