- Curator's comments
- The drawing has affinities with figures and composition of 'The Angel appearing to Tobias' in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, part of a series of five paitings for his patron, Carlo de' Rossi; Mahoney suggests Rosa re-used the composition afterwards for the painting; on the series of paintings see J. Scott, 'Salvator Rosa, his life and times', New Haven, 1995, p. 143. For mores studies of this painting see M. Mahoney, 'The Drawings of Salvator Rosa', New York, 1977, I, p.588-594, No 66.18-32.
