- This drawing, traditionally ascribed to Correggio, was catalogued by Popham as a work by his follower Bernardino Gatti. As Gustav Waagen first observed , it is a study for a picture in the collection of the Earl of Yarborough, Brockelsby Park (illustrated in Oberhuber fig. 2, p. 283; Frucco, 2010, fig. 10) which was formerly given to Gatti, but is now generally accepted as a work by Correggio's short-lived pupil Giorgio Gandini. The attribution to Gandini for the Yarborough painting, first proposed by Waagan, is convincing because it is clearly the same hand as the 'Holy Family with Saint Michael' (Parma, Galleria Nazionale; illustrated Oberhuber fig. 3, p. 283; Frucco fig. 2), one of a handful of works certainly by the artist. The change of attribution resulted in a number of drawings previously ascribed to Gatti being reassigned to Gandini. Two drawings for the Yarborough painting are in the BM (1895,0915.734 and 1854,0628.103; Popham 1967 nos. 29 and 30) and a further study for the figure of Saint Catherine is in the Louvre (inv. RF 500; Frucco no. 9, fig. 13).
Little is known of Gandini: he is thought to have been a pupil of Correggio and after the latter's death in 1535 he was given the commission to paint the choir vault and apse of the cathedral in Parma. The frescoes were never begun and on Gandini's death in 1538 the commission was passed to Bedoli, who executed the work. For biographical details on the artist, with details of his graphic oeuvre, see Washington and Parma catalogue pp. 184-7.
