Description
The Flight into Egypt: altered from Hercules Seghers; the Virgin riding a donkey led by Joseph on a hillside in the right foreground, a forest behind them and a landscape with a canal and hamlet in the central background; fifth state with highlights burnished on the figures and the ground in front of the Holy Family, cross-hatching added around the Virgin, on her back, next to the donkey's head and on Joseph's cloak, with dirty marks in the sky, before all marks in the sky as well as the hills in the far distance have been burnished away. c. 1652 Etching, burin and drypoint, printed on laid paper with watermark Watermark: Arms of London (Hinterding catalogue, variant A.a.a.)
