- Entry from 'Dürer and his Legacy', BM exh.cat 2002-3, no.215a:
'These four prints, cat.nos 215a-d belong to Dürer’s 'Engraved Passion', which he produced between 1507 and 1512. The series was particularly popular with the enamellists of Limoges. This print, together with 'Christ mocked' (Dodgson 58) were interpreted in two enamels of c. 1530 -1540 by Jean Pénicaud (c.1490 – after 1543) who belonged to the earliest of the eminent families of enamellists to be known by name (Victoria and Albert Museum; inv.nos C. 2383 – 1910 and 637 – 1870; see p.261, fig.27). The two certainly form a pair, and possibly originally belonged to a complete series of enamels by Jean Pénicaud after Dürer’s Engraved Passion. The interest of Pénicaud’s enamels lies in the incorporation of Dürer’s figures into an elaborate, contemporary French setting: a tiled floor, decorated with paillons (silver-foil under the paint to give the effect of semi-precious stones) and an elaborate coffered ceiling with stucco- effect relief on the columns. Dürer’s much smaller prints have very plain backgrounds comprised of unadorned stone columns and plain hangings. Much less is represented, in order to heighten the drama of the subjects and draw the eye towards the figures, which always form the focal point of Dürer’s prints.'
