Label text from Nativity show:
The bond between the Virgin and her son is expressed in a naturalistic manner by her tender embrace of the tightly swaddled infant. Her action has a particular poignancy because it prefigures her final embrace of the adult Christ after his death on the cross. The German artist has used paper coloured with wash, the lighting effects enhanced by gouache (lead white) highlights applied with a brush.
