- Curator's comments
- Nigel Tattersfield (email Jan 2022): An early trade card for David Pollock (1739-1815), before he took premises in both Piccadilly and Charing Cross from approximately 1790 and 1800 respectively, eventually settling upon the Charing Cross address about 1810 (London trade directories 1794-1816). Initially in partnership as Vaughan and Pollock he came to the attention of the Prince of Wales in 1783, enjoying his patronage thereafter until 1811, latterly as D & W Pollock (David and his son William); Georgian Papers Online https://gpp.rct.uk, Jan 2022, RA GEO/MAIN/25639/6/14/21/54/60/79. David Pollock's will is at TNA, PROB 11/1573/108 but his son and erstwhile partner William did not long survive him, dying in 1816, and the saddlery business ceased. However David Pollock and his wife Sarah Homeria had many heirs and spares. Three of them achieved distinction - Sir David Pollock (1780-1847), chief justice of Bombay; Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock (1783-1870), MP and judge in the court of exchequer; and Field Marshall Sir George Pollock (1786-1872). Portraits of the latter two are coll. BM.
