- Curator's comments
- According to the IFF, state I is characterised by a five-and-a-half lines text and is dated 1661 on plate; state II, by the addition of half-a-line of text ("Niepce du Card. de Richelieu") and the removal of the date; state III by more pronounced wrinkles on either side of the mouth, and a lace cravat with a tassel; state IV, by a lengthened nose, a different cravat in point-de-France needlework; and state V, by Veuve Bertrand's address replacing that of her late husband.
State unclear. This impression, which shows signs of wear, features the altered cravat occuring on state IV; however compared to an earlier state (O,1.39, presumably an impression of the third state) the nose has not been modified.
