- Curator's comments
- Possibly from Desrochers's 'Recueil de portraits de personnes qui se sont distinguées tant dans les Armes que dans Belles-Lettres et les Arts, comme aussi la famille royale de France et autres cours étrangères', published and sometimes engraved by Desrochers, and advertised in 'Mercure' in May 1726 (although Desrochers had started publishing these a few years before)
Not all the plates were engraved by Desrochers, who often only published them. After his death the series was taken over by Petit.
Desrochers engraved and published a large number of portraits in his career (see IFF), but not all of them were part of the series. The IFF indicates plates from the Recueil typically included the name and titles of the sitter on the border or in a cartouche, and some verses on a tablet in the lower part. The portraits often derive from earlier images.
