Lit.: N. Turner, 'Italian Drawings in the BM, Roman Baroque Drawings', London, 1999, I, no. 144(3)
Turner 1999
A drawing by Grimaldi showing a composition with the same kneeling saint but set in a different landscape is in the Istituto Nazionale, Rome (inv. no. FC 4557; 128484). The composition appears to be based on that of a painting by Pier Francesco Mola in the collection of Sir Denis Mahon, London (Lugano and Rome, 1989-90, pp.148 and 150, no. 1.2). A drawing in the Real Academia de San Fernando, Madrid (inv.no. 2379; Lugano and Rome, 1989-90, pp.240-41, no.III.32) seems to show Grimaldi copying a ceiling design by Mola for a room in the Palazzo Pamphilj at Valmontone and would appear to be another instance of Grimaldi copying from Mola.
