Acquired in a dealer's mount with the following annotations: "Charles West Cope RA, 1811-1890." Verso 67711."
A copy of the stock number from the mount has been retained with John Christian's invoices for work by Charles West Cope.
The price, stock number on the mount and date correspond with an invoice from Abbott & Holder (S 13862, dated 05.03.04) where the following information is provided:
"67711, Charles West Cope RA (1811-1890) Mother and Child. Pen and ink."
Abbott & Holder's list states that this work was among a number of drawings by Cope acquired from the Sabin Gallery "who had acquired them from the artist's great grand daughter."
John Christian's papers include a sheet of paper with the following notes:
