- Acquisition notes
- John Christian purchased this drawing from Abbott & Holder. He retained the invoice No. 13547 dated 16.01.04 which provides the following information:
"William Strang RA (1859-1921)
66304 Pencil drawing Dedicated by Strang to William Rothenstein."
The drawing is no.76 in Abbott & Holder's list no: 358, January 2004 described as:
"Ghostly rowers on a dark lake; a strong, quick black chalk sketch dedicated to William Rothenstein. 1900."
(Although the drawing is described as pencil on the invoice, the close dates and corresponding dedication to Rothenstein suggest that they refer to the same work.)
The drawing was acquired by The British Museum in a card mount inscribed on the front: "William Strang RA, 1859-1921" and on the back S13574, Christian 66304." (Abbott & Holder's stock number on the invoice."

John Christian's notes state that the drawings' provenance was:
"Given by Strang to William Rothenstein
By descent to Sir John Rothenstein, his posthumous sale, Sotheby's Olympia.
Bought from Abbott & Holder, January 2004, (List 358, no.76).
